Bye bye breast milk

Well, we tried our best. Gia’s body just wasn’t going to keep doing it anymore, and decided to up and quit with the milk production. We tried all kinds of tricks to goose the production. Gia upped her fenugreek consumption. We tried having her look at pictures of the kids again while pumping, even getting the kids to breastfeed a little bit. Nothing worked.

So we enter a new phase, which is a bit bittersweet for me personally. Reaching this milestone symbolically represents the “closing of the shop” for our little family. If all goes as planned, Gia will never breastfeed ever again. Our family is complete, but we also won’t experience the magic of bringing new life into the world again (although the span separating this sentiment from never wanting to experience it again is rather small).

On the upside, the kids have had 6 good months of mommy’s milk. For most intents and purposes, they appear strong and healthy. Gia wins back more than one precious hour of free time each day (not having to pump anymore). And our investment in Abbott Labs is going to start to pay off in a big way (they make the baby formula).
